2024 Tuition Increased by 1.96% at Public, 3.59% at Private Schools

The average 2024 tuition & fees of U.S. Colleges is $8,905 for state residents and $19,060 for out-of-state students. In private schools, the average tuition is $29,821.

For graduate schools, the average graduate tuition is $11,555 for state residents and $20,919 for out-of-state students. In private graduate schools, the average tuition is $19,424.

Compared to last year, the 2024 undergraduate tuition & fees has increased by 1.96% in public schools and 3.59% in private schools. The graduate school tuition & fees has increased by 1.72% in public schools and 2.21% in private schools.

U.S. Colleges 2024 Tuition Changes By State

The below table shows the 2024 Tuition Changes by State. For the tuition statistics, we include only 4-years colleges such as national universities and liberal arts colleges, but exclude community colleges and trade/vocational schools.

South Dakota colleges has the lowest undergraduate tuition & fees of $9,887 and Virginia colleges has the highest tuition & fees of $35,213 for the academic year 2023-2024.

For graduate schools, North Dakota has the lowest graduate program tuition & fees of $10,467 and Hawaii has the highest graduate tuition of $30,806.
